A Spanish tourist was surprised to discover a little slice of the UK in a very different part of the world. Details from road signs to number plates in the area looked like they could be found in a major UK city, despite being found hundreds of miles away.
TikToker Dídac shared a clip of the British territory in Gibraltar, next to La Línea de la Concepción, to the social network, highlighting some of its peculiarities. He said the streets and traffic signs resemble London more than Andalusia, albeit with a few major differences.
“When you think you are in Bournemouth, but there are no clouds in the sky,” Dídac said in Spanish.
“Look, it seems I’m in London or Birmingham, but we are next to Spain. We are next to La Línea de la Concepción. This is Gibraltar.
“Look, the road lines change completely. It literally looks like the United Kingdom.” However, unlike here, drivers don’t drive on the left. “They drive on the right because otherwise it would be very complicated to make a lane change at the border work.”
Dídac continued: “In Gibraltar, they don’t use UK number plates as such; instead, they have their own adapted ones. They carry the code GBZ, which identifies this territory.”
Gibraltar is a unique place where British influence coexists with cultural and geographical proximity to Spain. Its strategic position and unique history make it a destination full of contrasts, even in something as everyday as its roads.
People were quick to comment on the clip, with one person writing: “And when you hop on the bus, what do you say? Hola or hello?”
“I’ve been there and it’s a weird sensation,” said another, while others argued whether Gibraltar should really be considered a part of Spain.
