Drivers can avoid damaging important part when de-icing windscreen with useful winter tip

A popular TikTok personality has warned drivers that they could destroy a crucial component of their car if they use them before properly de-icing the windscreen this winter.

@dadadvicefrombo regularly posts short videos to his TikTok page in which he shares useful tips that viewers should follow around the home or in the car.

In a popular video, @dadadvicefrombo recommended that motorists avoid turning on the windscreen wipers before they had removed all of the ice from the windscreen.

He explained: “I want to talk about windshield wipers. Rule number one, never run your windshield wipers across a frozen windshield, because it will tear up the rubber on your wiper.

“So how do you tell if you need new wipers? Well, if you see streaks on your windshield when your wipers are going back and forth, the rubber on your wipers has probably worn out.”

In the video, @dadadvicefrombo noted that the rougher icy surface on the windscreen can cause the wiper blades to wear out at a much faster rate.

Turning on the wipers before clearing the windscreen could also cause significant damage to the motor that runs them if the ice causes them to stick to the screen.

The TikToker noted that drivers should always replace worn out windscreen wipers, which are available at car part stores for as little as £10 per blade.

@dadadvicefrombo also recommended that motorists regularly wash their vehicle’s windscreen but suggested they should never use water to get rid of dirt.

He advised: “You’re going to get a lot of mud and grime on your windshield in the wintertime, that’s what wiper fluid is for, but never just put water in your reservoir.

“Wiper fluid is actually designed not to freeze in winter, that’s why you [should] use it. You can pick it up at any auto parts store, and it’s really easy to put in.”

With five million views and over 460,000 likes, many viewers were thankful for the TikTok user’s tips that could save them from causing damage this winter.

One viewer wrote: “Guilty of running wipers on a frozen car. It’s just so hard to wait sometimes!”

Another joked: “Watching this like I’m not going to just make my husband deal with any car situations.”
