Drivers can avoid £2,500 fine and disqualification by keeping windscreen clear

The vehicle financing company LeaseCar.uk has warned drivers that leaving their car dirty could land them a £2,500 fine.

Whilst spring is on the way, the temperatures are still cold and the roads are often covered in grit and mud, meaning vehicles can get dirty much quicker.

However, Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk noted that motorists who avoid washing the windows of their car at the very least run the risk of costly fines.

He explained: “Ignoring regular cleaning advice could land drivers with a £1,000 fine, three penalty points, and a discretionary disqualification for having an obstructed view of the road because of the dirt build up.

“Those driving a PCV [Passenger Carrying Vehicle] or goods vehicle face an even higher £2,500 fine for not having a clear view of the road ahead. The Highway Code and road laws may feel like they are there to catch drivers out, but they are ultimately keeping road users safe.”

According to the Highway Code, drivers can be fined and receive penalty points on their licence for dirty car windows if they block the view of the road.

Whilst most drivers will be fined £1,000 for this offence, owners of goods vehicles such as vans and lorries can be issued a £2,500 penalty.

The fine is also applicable for any ice or condensation on the windscreen, meaning it is important for drivers to make sure they are able to see their surroundings before setting off.

Tim added that it is best for drivers to clean the windows of their vehicle as soon as possible after noticing any dirt to avoid it becoming harder to get off.

He continued: “We are advising motorists to ensure they clean their windows and windscreen as soon as they notice any mess to avoid any harsh penalties.

“From road salt build-up to condensation, motorists must ensure their windscreen and windows are completely clean for a full view of the road.”

During low temperatures many drivers wash their car less frequently to avoid spending time out in the cold.

However, LeaseCar.uk advised washing the vehicle at least every two weeks to avoid view-obstructing dirt from building up.

The company also recommended drivers buy a specialist glass cleaner that can be sprayed onto the screen, with many costing under £5 per bottle.
