A spokesperson at One Sure Insurance explained: “The Road Traffic Act 1988 stipulates that any vehicle presenting danger to public safety is in breach of the law, and drivers can face significant fines if their car is deemed unsafe.

“A £50 fine for a cracked windscreen may seem small at first, but neglecting the repair could lead to a much larger issue, leaving you vulnerable to bigger fines or even a failed MOT.

“It’s far cheaper and easier to fix small problems as they arise than to deal with the fallout of ignoring them.”

Car windscreens can become damaged for a variety of reasons with chips, cracks and scratches the most common causes.

Repairing a cracked windscreen can cost anywhere from £50 to £150 making it a fairly cost-effective solution.

In some situations, road users can be issued a whopping £2,500 fine and up to three penalty points for cracked windscreen damage.

This is because The Highway Code clearly states that motorists must have a full view of the road ahead at all times.

One Sure Insurance added: “When it comes time to return the vehicle, any damage to the glass will likely result in further charges from the finance company to cover repairs.

“It is best to fix any cracks or chips straight away to avoid costly fines, penalty points, and even failed MOT tests in the future.

“It’s important to stay proactive in vehicle maintenance to avoid unexpected expenses and to maintain the long-term value of your car.”
