Dr Hilary Jones’s ‘unusual tactic’ to lower blood pressure

TV doctor Hilary Jones has shed light on an “unusual tactic” that could aid those with menopausal mood swings or mid-life blood pressure fluctuations.

He referenced new research indicating the calming fragrance of juniper berry and bergamot essential oils might offer relief.

Dr Hilary Jones, who serves as an independent advisor to M-Club, a health and wellness menopause range, said: “The hormonal fluctuations that occur in the years leading up to and around menopause can bring about profound changes in both physical and emotional wellbeing.

“Research shows that over 15.5 million women in the UK are currently either perimenopausal or menopausal – and, around 85 per cent will have some type of symptoms.

“But, while most women are aware of more commonly known symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, weight gain and insomnia, many may not connect high blood pressure or emotional symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety and depression to hormonal mid-life changes.

“This was highlighted in a new report by M-Club – Helping Women Navigate Menopause With Confidence – which showed that 42% of women, and 27% of menopausal women, know nothing or very little about the emotional and mental effects of menopause. During menopause, many women experience a noticeable shift in mental clarity and emotional stability.

“Fluctuating hormone levels, particularly the decline in oestrogen, can lead to symptoms such as brain fog, forgetfulness and even difficulty concentrating, which can make a woman feel unproductive and anxious. A drop in oestrogen (which has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system) can also make women more susceptible to high blood pressure.”

‘Unusual tactic’

Dr Jones added: “While using soothing scents may not seem like an obvious tactic, latest research suggests that juniper berry and bergamot essential oils may be beneficial in helping to alleviate symptoms, especially when applied with a pulse point roller such as the M-Club Mood Harmony Pulse Point Roller.

“Research found that when the essential bergamot oil was inhaled it was found to help improve psychological well-being and help alleviate depressive symptoms, making it ideal for women who are suffering from mood swings.

“Other research found that inhaling juniper essential oil for five minutes significantly helped decrease systolic and diastolic blood pressure and increased high-frequency power level ratios of heart rate variability (an indicator of parasympathetic system activity) to induce relaxation.

“If you are looking for help through the menopause such as tackling mood swings, busting stress to help ease blood pressure issues, try the M-Club Mood Harmony Pulse Point Roller which contains a gentle blend of Juniper Berry and Bergamot essential oils .

“Simply apply a small amount to pulse points such as the wrists, neck and temples. This pocket-sized aid is great for helping women to relax especially during menopausal mood changes.”
