Donald Trump looked irked after being struck in the face by a boom microphone while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Friday.

After briefly glaring at the mic operator, the US president quipped: “She just made television tonight. She just became a big story tonight, right? Did you see that?”

The incident happened as Mr Trump was answering a question about efforts to secure the release of hostages from Gaza.

As he leaned in to hear a reporter, the microphone—covered with a windscreen known as a “dead cat”—knocked into his lip and cheek.

The mic operator quickly apologised, but the moment had already caught the attention of reporters and cameras.

Footage of the moment quickly went viral, with supporters praising Mr Trump’s response and critics debating whether the accident was disrespectful.

Turning Point USA Founder and CEO Charlie Kirk posted on X: “Unreal these people. Have some respect.” He later added that Mr Trump “handled it graciously”.

Others saw the moment as a sign of the frequently tense relationship between Mr Trump and the media, which has been a defining feature of his political career.

The awkward exchange came just hours after Mr Trump delivered a scathing speech at the Department of Justice, where he accused officials of turning it into a “Department of Injustice”.

He vowed to “expel the corrupt forces” within the agency and pledged to reveal what he called “a legendary expose” of its inner workings.

Addressing an audience of officials and reporters, Mr Trump claimed his political opponents had weaponised the justice system against him and his supporters.

He said: “We will expose what has been happening behind closed doors.

“The corruption, the lies, the targeting of political enemies—it all ends now.”

He went on to attack prosecutors involved in cases against him, repeating his frequent claim that they were engaged in a politically motivated witch hunt.

Mr Trump also used his DoJ address to defend his legal team and highlight recent courtroom victories. He praised US District Judge Aileen Cannon for dismissing a criminal case against him and reiterated his belief that he was being unfairly targeted.

He further announced a new initiative with Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, to combat fentanyl trafficking, positioning it as a major policy priority for his administration.

The day’s events highlighted Mr Trump’s combative approach to both the media and his political opponents.

His remarks at the DoJ signalled a clear warning to his critics, reinforcing his pledge to overhaul the agency if re-elected.

Meanwhile, his reaction to the microphone mishap became yet another viral moment in his presidency, once again drawing attention to his often unpredictable interactions with the press.

As Mr Trump boarded Air Force One later in the day, reporters shouted follow-up questions about both the DoJ speech and the microphone incident.

He ignored them, giving only a wave before disappearing into the aircraft.
