Donald Trump’s own family claim the president has been taken aback and left ‘stunned’ by the backlash to his contentious trade tariffs.
Mary Trump, Donald’s niece – who frequently shares videos on YouTube slamming her uncle – claimed his own policies are wreaking havoc on America’s tourism sector.
The implementation of tariffs, she argues, are slashing the number of holidaymakers who would typically flock to the States.
Travellers who would ordinarily journey from destinations including Canada and Europe to hotspots such as Florida, Las Vegas and New England are staying away.
However, the president’s niece insists his policies are delivering a devastating blow to visitor figures and consequently, damaging the US economy, reports The Mirror US.
Mary, a vocal opponent of his commercial and political career throughout his presidency, once again turned to video platform YouTube to declare he was ‘stunned’ by the response to his tariffs.
She declared: “Donald has sworn time and time again that he’ll boost American business and break down costs.
“But Canadian tourists have stopped coming to America, Seven months into the Trump regime, tourism is tagging, the border is emptier and more hostile than ever and tariffs are hitting the very industry where tourism matters most.”
Her video entitled ‘Trump BLINDSIDED as Canadian Boycott SPREADS’ contends visitors are opting not to travel to the US due to the cost. Tariffs are reportedly set to cost the average American an additional $2400 a year, with everyday items such as food, drink and clothing expected to rise after they were introduced.
However, the global reaction has been less than favourable, and the financial impact of these levies will be felt domestically.
Moreover, it’s predicted that international tourism will also suffer as prices in the US continue to climb.
Mary Trump Media continues to highlight the negative implications, stating: “Correct me if I’m wrong, but none of that sounds good. Prices are up and tourism and all the businesses that rely on tourism, are down.
“Even Canadian citizens who used to flock across the border for back to school shopping are staying away.
“I never thought I’d hear a restaurant owner, of all people, say that they did better business during a global pandemic than they are doing now as a direct result of Donald’s tariffs, but this is our reality.”
The Financial Times reported that Trump plans to “substantially” increase tariffs on imports from India due to its Russian oil purchases. This comes after India failed to reach an agreement with the White House to lower levies on its exports to the US, unlike other countries such as the European Union.
The US president is also aiming to curb Russia’s ability to finance the war in Ukraine as he continues to seek a conflict resolution between Moscow and Kyiv.
This follows a body language expert revealing Trump’s hidden “guilty look” as he commented on Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s “machine gun” lips.
