Trying to get a new puppy to stop biting isn’t always easy, especially because they mean no harm. For new dog owners, learning to train a little one also comes with its own challenges.
But thankfully this dog training expert has a piece of advice which will help all pup owners.
Mordor Gundogs is a Perthshire-based training school for family pet dogs, gundogs, and their owners. On their TikTok account, the company posted a video sharing one trick for owners to get their puppies to stop biting.
According to the company founder, Charlie Thorburn, the trick is to simply not give a puppy attention.
In the video Charlie Thorburn is sitting with a puppy as he shares the tip. He said: “If she started to bite me now, I would just pop her on the ground, and I’d stand up and I’d walk away.”
He went on to mention some of the common things dog owners do instead, such as telling their dogs no or trying to give them something else to bite on.
However, he added: “If you’re very, very clear with a young dog that every time they start doing an unwanted behaviour, they’re not going to get your attention anymore, it fixes it really quite quickly.”
The video received hundreds of comments from users sharing that the advice worked or asking follow-up questions and commenting on other concerns.
One user said: “Did this with both my puppies & never had any issues with biting!”
The dog expert also informed his followers that it is important to get puppies out of the habit of thinking that biting and “attacking” is fun but ensured them that it is not “out of malice”.
Although the video which got a million views proved to be a great help for many dog owners, one thing that definitely caught the attention of viewers was the adorable puppy that featured in it.
