In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, all MLB players have worn a commemorative patch on the side of their caps this weekend.

When Emmet Sheehan took the mound for the Dodgers on Sunday, his came with an even more personal touch.

Right next to the patch on his hat, Sheehan also inscribed the initials “E.F.” in honor of his late uncle Edward Fergus Jr., who was killed on 9/11 while working at the World Trade Center.

Fergus worked at the firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which had offices 100 floors up in the North Tower of the WTC. He was tragically one of more than 650 employees of the company who perished in the attacks, according to the 9/11 Living Memorial.

Fergus lived in Connecticut, which is also where Sheehan –– who was not even 2 years old at the time of the attacks –– grew up before going to school at Boston College and being drafted by the Dodgers in the sixth round in 2021.

Sunday’s game was only Sheehan’s second start back in the Dodgers’ rotation since he returned from a stint in triple-A in August, after being optioned after the trade deadline with a 5.29 ERA in his first 20 starts this year.

Like last week, when he gave up only one run in 5 ⅔ innings while striking out 10 batters, Sunday was another step in the right direction for Sheehan, who spun six shutout frames against the Miami Marlins while giving up only two hits.

That only added to the emotions of the day for the Northeast native, whose small tribute to his uncle came with significant sentimental meaning.
