DNA analysis has uncovered a new lead in the mystery of a man who died in a suspected self-immolation on a remote California beach, pointing to Middle Eastern ancestry and a possible connection to one of the world’s oldest religions.

But more than six years after his charred remains were discovered inside a bonfire, investigators still do not know who he was or why he died.

The man’s remains were found at Pescadero State Beach, south of San Francisco, on July 24, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office believes the man, estimated to have been between 30 and 65, built the fire and died by self-immolation.

The remains were so badly burned that conventional forensic examination offered few clues to his identity, forcing investigators to turn to DNA analysis in the hope of finding answers.

Investigators have not established that the man was Zoroastrian, or that any religious beliefs played a role in his death. copcarpics/Instagram

Now, genetic material analyzed by the nonprofit organization Wolf Pack DNA has pointed to Iranian ancestry, with possible connections to eastern Mediterranean populations or the Zoroastrian community in Tehran.

Zoroastrianism originated in ancient Iran long before Christianity and remains one of the world’s oldest surviving religions. Although once influential across the Persian world, it is now practised by relatively small communities, including a minority in Iran.

Investigators have not established that the man was Zoroastrian, or that any religious beliefs played a role in his death.

Although the latest findings offer a new avenue for the investigation, identifying the man remains a challenge according to experts.

Genetic genealogy works by comparing DNA from unidentified remains with profiles voluntarily uploaded to genealogy databases. The process can help investigators identify relatives and build family trees, potentially leading to a name.

In this case, however, the available genetic matches have yet to produce a definitive identification. The scarcity of DNA profiles from people with the man’s likely background has further complicated the search.

Assistant director of Wolf Pack DNA, Diana Monnette, said researchers had shifted their focus towards public appeals, hoping someone might recognize the man or remember seeing him around the time of his death.

“By sharing the available information on platforms such as Reddit and Facebook, we hope to reach someone who may recognize this man or remember something about the events that took place on the beach that could lead to his identification,” Monnette told SFGATE.

Investigators are also seeking information about belongings found near the fire, including black boots in European size 4, a green duffel bag, a white metal key attached to a red keychain, a small Starlight Candle-brand candle, a black headscarf patterned with medium-sized white dots and the letters “GS”.

Authorities have not publicly established who owned the items or whether they indicate a connection to a particular person or community.

How the man reached the beach remains a mystery to investigators.

Pescadero State Beach has no public transport service, leaving investigators without an obvious explanation for how he arrived at the isolated coastal location.

His death also occurred during the height of the pandemic, when restrictions and disruption had altered daily life across California.

Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office on 650-599-1536 or the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office on 650-312-5562.

People who have taken DNA tests may also be able to help by uploading eligible profiles to GEDmatch or DNA Justice. Researchers stress that GEDmatch users must specifically opt in to law enforcement matching for their profiles to be available for eligible investigations.
