Ditch avocado for a tastier seasonal fruit on toast — not tomatoes

When you think of avocados, your mind immediately goes to toast. Although this quick lunch solution may have dominated for years, it’s not the only fruit worthy of the spotlight. As the seasons change, there are fresher, more flavourful options that can bring new life to your breakfast or snack.

Food editor Nadine Brown at Olive has shared a simple yet tasty alternative to avocados on toast that all foodies must try — and it only takes 20 minutes to make. She shared: “Savour these slices of toasted sourdough rye, covered in blue cheese and lemon juice-soaked pear, and drizzled with salted brown butter honey.”

Ingredients

  • One pear
  • ½ lemon juiced
  • 100g of salted butter
  • Two tablespoons of runny honey
  • Four small slices of rye sourdough
  • 120g blue cheese
  • Two thyme sprigs
  • 10g of finely chopped toasted pecans

Method

To begin, toss the pear slices with lemon juice in a small bowl. In a small pan, melt the butter over medium heat and cook until browned for about six to eight minutes.

Whisk in the honey until fully combined, then cover and keep warm. Lightly toast the bread and spread generously with blue cheese.

Drain and pat dry the pear slices, then arrange them on top of the toasts. Whisk the brown butter honey again before drizzling it over the toasts, then finish with thyme leaves and pecans before serving.

A TikTok creator named @emilyontoat replicated this meal, but instead baked the avocados and cheese in the air fryer until browned. She then paired it with a side of jam.

The chef at Good Food said, “This super speedy meal is packed with vegetarian sources of protein, creamy avocados, spicy kidney beans, and crumbled cheese.”
