Disturbing thriller starring Oscar-winner gets super-low 7% rating as it's 'inappropriate'

This 1996 movie has sparked debate due to its contentious subject matter and graphic violence, all portrayed by an actor familiar to audiences for his TV appearances.

Renowned for his portrayal of action hero Jack Bauer in 24, Kiefer Sutherland takes a stark detour as he embodies a merciless serial rapist and killer in Eye for an Eye, opposite the acclaimed Sally Field. Viewers have confessed their discomfort at witnessing him in such a dark role.

A critique on Rotten Tomatoes declares: “The performance given by Kiefer Sutherland in the role of a psychopathic serial rapist and murderer is on point for showcasing his range in acting talent.”

Yet some watchers reported being inundated by emotions of “sadness, anger, and doom” following Sutherland’s jarringly authentic act.

Directed by John Schlesinger and adapted by the filmmaker duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a best-selling novel, Eye for an Eye paints a chilling narrative. It recounts how Karen, played by Field, is out shopping when her daughter Julie suffers a savage rape and murder at home, even speaking to her mother on the phone during the assault, as per the Mirror US.

In the wake of Julie’s murder, mother Karen embarks on a relentless quest to unmask her child’s assailant, vowing to exact revenge.

The DNA evidence pointed directly to the murderer, yet a legal technicality led to the case’s dismissal; the defence team were not provided with a sample of this proof. Stunned and driven by fury, Karen decides she can no longer rely on the system and takes it upon herself to design a meticulous scheme to terminate the life of her daughter’s assailant.

A viewer commented, “While the violence is jarring and effectively upsetting, everything else here feels ridiculously inappropriate. From weird characterisations and unnecessary comic relief to blatantly obvious symbolism… nothing here besides the opening rape/murder can be taken seriously.”

Another individual weighed in: “This movie, though a difficult subject matter, was well executed in its day. It’s disturbing, scary, and leaves your palms sweating in several scenes. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a good thriller.”

Critique of the film often centres around accusations that the creators indulge in emotional manipulation of their audience, with many viewers concurring that Eye for an Eye dodges deeper themes such as flaws within the justice system or the psychological motivations of the crimes, focusing rather on “sensationalising” the perpetrator’s offences.

One review highlighted the harsh reality depicted, saying: “This movie is hauntingly realistic in many ways. Sutherland versus Field is a good combination I wouldn’t expect. However, this movie lacks moral undertones-an element absolutely necessary if you’re going to talk about the issues this movie does.”

With a rather low 7% overall rating on the review site Rotten Tomatoes, the thriller Eye for an Eye is now available to stream on Amazon Prime, allowing you to judge for yourself just how gripping it truly is.
