Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic posted a picture of himself alongside Jota on his Instagram story, with the caption: “You will be remembered my friend.”

Club legend Jamie Carragher wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with every one of their family and friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.”

Gary Neville added: “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.”

Stan Collymore, who played for Liverpool between 1995 and 1997, wrote: “I’m sure like many in the football family there’s just a profound sense of shock, sadness and disbelief at the news of Diogo Jota’s death at the unfathomably young age of 28.

“Newly married too. Sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club. Devastating.”

Many rival teams shared tributes to Jota after Liverpool confirmed his death, with Manchester United posting: “Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC.”

Everton, meanwhile, said in a statement: “Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this sad time.”

Wolves, who Jota played for before joining Liverpool, added: “We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves.

“The memories he created will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. You will be truly missed and always remembered.”

Raul Jimenez, who played alongside Jota at Wolves, said on Instagram: “It’s hard to receive this kind of news and I still can’t believe it. An excellent colleague, friend, and above all, a great father. Thanks for everything, my friend. We’ll always remember you.”

Ruben Neves, another former Wolves team-mate, added: “They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you!”

Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo said: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, just now you had gotten married.

“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”

Meanwhile, an official Premier League statement read: “Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre.

“Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion.”
