A former school dinner lady has shared the recipe for school’s chocolate oat cake that all students love.
Kate Keogh is a popular TikTok content creator who is often seen making videos with her parents, Jane and Joe.
In a recent video, Kate shocked her 98,000 followers by revealing that her mum, Jane, had previously worked as a school dinner lady, and therefore knew all of the recipes to popular school desserts.
“There’s something about mum we’ve not shared before,” Kate said at the start of the video. “No, there’s lots of things about me you’ve not shared before,” Jane added, before Kate went on to say: “Last year, she was a dinner lady.”
Taking advantage of her mum’s job, she said: “Today we’re making my favourite – chocolate oat cakes. Some schools call them chocolate oaties, but in our school we call them chocolate oat cakes.”
How to make school’s chocolate oaties
“So the first thing we need is a whole stick – 250 grams – of butter,” Kate said before cutting off the butter into smaller pieces before melting it in the microwave.
The next step is to add 175 grams of porridge oats, 175 grams of self-raising flour, 140 grams of sugar, and 15 grams of cocoa powder before stirring it all together.
“I’m not sure we melted the butter enough,” Kate said as she struggled to stir the dry-looking mix.
As Jane took over the stirring, Kate said: “This was my favourite thing to have at school.”
“I liked the school sponge they do,” her mum replied while stirring. “It’s a plane sponge but with hundreds – with icing and hundreds and thousands on the top.
As they’d mixed everything through then went on to pour the dry mixture into a square baking tin that’s been lined with parchment paper.
“It’s quite a dry mixture,” Kate said as she made sure to push the mixture down into the baking tray before putting it in the oven at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.
As they later went on to take the cake out of the oven, Kate showed it to the camera and pointed out that it had ‘puffed up’ slightly.
“It smells like a chocolate oat cake,” Kate said, while her mum added: “It looks like a chocolate oat cake.”
They then left the cake to cool down before getting started on the icing.
For the icing, they mixed 125 grams of icing sugar and 20 grams of cocoa powder before slowly adding water while mixing until they got the consistency they were after. They then spread it onto the cake.
They allowed the icing to set on the cake before trying it.
“It smells just like the school one,” Kate said as she cut it into squares. “Guys, look at this.”
“Now the proof is in the tasting,” her mum said before they both took a bite each. “It’s delicious.”
