Wizz Air has axed one of its routes between the UK and an underrated European city break destination. There are so many worthy city breaks in Europe, and even when you have been enjoying city breaks for years, you probably still haven’t even scratched the surface. One of those cities, which is full of amazing architecture, delicious food and friendly people, is connected to the UK via Wizz Air’s direct route from Luton. However, that route will soon cease to operate.
Wizz Air’s direct flight from London Luton Airport to Vienna, the capital of Austria, will stop in March 2026. The Austrian city is home to more than 2 million people and a slew of things to do and see, made famous by its thriving art scene, history and architectural beauty. Vienna is a city loved by many who have had the priviledge of visiting, often ranked much higher than other European capitals in terms of attractions to experience there.
Mauro Peneda, managing director of Wizz Air Malta, said: “Unfortunately, the airport cost base in Vienna, as well as taxes and ground handling services, have risen significantly since our launch, making continued operations unsustainable.”
“This was a difficult, but necessary decision to safeguard the long-term competitiveness of our business,” he added. “We will support our colleagues in Vienna with job opportunities across our ever-growing network. We are grateful for their dedication and thank our passengers for their understanding.”
Vienna has been called “underrated” by many people who have visited, including a number of TikTok users. The sentiment is shared by travel writer Ben Schlappig, who called it “the most underrated city in Europe”.
Among the top-rated things to do in Vienna is Schonbrunn Palace, which is actually Austria’s most frequently visited tourist attraction.
It is a historic stately home with its original furnishings that gives a great insight into the history of Vienna and Austria as a whole. Meanwhile, the historical centre of Vienna has gorgeous buildings and monuments around every corner, while the Belvedere Museum is a treat for art lovers as it boasts an extensive gallery.
There is also plenty of family fun to be had in Vienna, especially at Prater, a free-to-enter theme park with rides, games, bars, and restaurants.
Visitors have been impressed by their time spent in Vienna. One Quroa user shared: “My impression of Vienna was that it was a very elegant, cultured, and civilised city with something of an “old-fashioned” atmosphere and a city that has probably not changed with the times as much as many other European cities have. It was a very pleasant place in which to just stroll around and loaf around, soaking up the atmosphere, and having the occasional refreshment break.”
Another commented: “I visited Vienna this year and I can say that it is one of the most beautiful exponents of the European culture. Packed with museums and gorgeous parks, the city is ideal for families, couples, and people who enjoy calmness and cultural activities.”
Wizz Air has also cut flights to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, from Liverpool and Glasgow.
