This was a new one, even for Deion Sanders.
The Colorado football coach chose to end his weekly press conference on Tuesday by explaining why he appeared to be speaking in tongues after his team’s blowout win over Weber State last week.
Sanders, 59, opened his postgame press conference by speaking about 10 unintelligible words before saying ‘let’s go’ and fielding questions, causing a stir as people wondered what was happening.
His explanation was a simple — yet still slightly bizarre one — after being upset with the way his team played despite the 52-21 victory.
Sanders was still steaming as he was getting set to speak with reporters and had to find a way to get in the right mindset before doing so.
“I had just come from addressing the team, and I lit them up, so I had to calm down,” Sanders said Tuesday. “And the only way I know how to calm down is to pray in the spirit. So, you know, it’s not a gimmick. There’s not a ‘look at me.’ No. No. That’s real.”
This isn’t the first time the Pro Football Hall of Famer has used the method, adding that he’s also done so while preparing to have surgery, as well as in other circumstances.
“That’s what I do,” Sanders said. “And I’ve done that everywhere I’ve been. And we’ve got evidence. So there’s no game. There’s no gimmick. I love the Lord with all my heart, and I’m not scared to speak it in front of anybody, anywhere, at any time. But it’s not a planned type of thing.”
Colorado (2-0) is off to a fast start to Sanders’ fourth year with the Buffaloes, starting with a statement 14-13 win over Georgia Tech in the season opener. Colorado is trying to rebound from a disappointing 3-9 campaign.
