David Mitchell owns just two albums – and one is a 'masterpiece'

The star of BBC’s Ludwig David Mitchell has claimed to have only purchased two albums in his lifetime, and one is a “masterpiece.” Technically, he has purchased three albums, as he previously owned two copies of Phil Collins’ 1989 classic, But Seriously, which is often described as a “masterpiece” in reviews. He had spoken of his love of the album during an appearance on Would I Lie To You in 2008 and reiterated it during a chat with NME.

“I have only ever bought two albums. For a long time, I had only ever bought one, which was …But Seriously by Phil Collins. I was 15 and I thought I should be more into music. So I went to WHSmith and I looked on their chart on the wall and at Number One was Phil Collins …But Seriously. I thought, ‘Well, I’ll buy that one then.’ If you want to know why I never bought another one – listen to it,” he told the publication.

However, in 2018, during another appearance on Would I Lie To You, he revealed he had added another recording to his collection.

The panel were tasked with guessing whether or not he was telling the truth as he announced: “10 years ago, on this show, I revealed I’d only ever bought one album. Phil Collins …But Seriously.

“I’m now pleased to report that I’ve since doubled my collection,” he said. Probed by the panel, he said it was a Susan Boyle record.

Host Rob Brydon looked incredulous and asked him: “Why would you buy a Susan Boyle record – with the greatest of respect to Susan – why would you choose her?”

“Well, because it was much talked about, yeah, the time of its release, and I was looking for something to write about for The Observer,” he said. The panel looked unconvinced, particularly when he couldn’t name any Susan Boyle songs. “But I could guess a lot of the songs because…I don’t think she’d written the songs we were talking about.

Rob then challenged him, saying: “I will tell you the names of some of Susan’s album releases…tell me if any of them ring a bell.”

“I promise you, the album title is not gonna ring a bell for me. It was the Susan Boyle album,” he insisted.

Despite his caginess, David was actually telling the truth, much to Rob and the panel’s surprise.
