David Beckham and wife Victoria remain one of sport’s most celebrated couples, yet they still have their irritations with one another. And it’s the Manchester United legend David who particularly knows how to wind up his spouse. Football remains central to the Beckhams’ world despite David having retired over a decade ago. The England icon called time on his playing career at Paris Saint-Germain back in 2013, but his passion for the beautiful game never diminished.
Becks has channelled portions of his substantial wealth into co-owning clubs including Inter Miami and Salford City. Whilst attending the latter’s recent victory against Swindon Town, he revealed one particular habit that irritates his wife. When questioned about whether he watches much football, he told Salford’s official YouTube channel: “I do actually. I do. There’s just something…even if it’s on in the background, I love it.
“Victoria hates it. But she hates the fact that when I’ve got the football on in the background, she’s like, ‘You’re not even watching it.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, but [smiles]…'”
‘Posh’ may have anticipated her husband’s football fixation would fade following his retirement from playing. However, the opposite seems true given his various investments through the years.
Victoria was presumably well aware of what she was signing up for when she began dating the United icon back in 1997. However, more than 25 years since their initial encounter, Beckham revealed his football obsession occasionally causes friction in the bedroom.
“I was very professional and regimented, actually,” Beckham remarked when questioned about any pre-match superstitions during his playing days. “Always used to eat the same food, do the same thing, bed early.
“If I was wearing a new pair of boots, I used to wear ’em in [smiles]…in bed. [I’d] try not to fall asleep but would fall asleep sometimes wearing the boots. Just so they’d mould a little bit. Back in the day, you’d get a new pair of boots, and they’d be quite stiff.
“So you’d bend them, throw them around a little bit, then put them on and wear them. Wear them around the bedroom…don’t do it anymore obviously. Every now and again for Victoria, y’know [laughs].”
It’s evident that wedding a footballer requires tolerating their fixation well beyond their playing years. That said, not every retired player possesses the financial means to indulge their passion quite like Beckham has managed.
In fairness to David, he’s been spotted accompanying Victoria to numerous fashion events throughout the years, including those showcasing her own label. And perhaps that’s where Becks finds his justification for watching (or not watching) as much football as he desires.
