Daniel Radcliffe has revealed his favourite book – and it’s far from what you may think. The 34-year-old Hollywood actor rose to fame by starring in JK Rowling’s renowned Harry Potter series.
Though many fans of wizards might assume Radcliffe’s favourite book is an obvious choice, the actor has a different preference in mind. Far from the wizard world, he revealed that The Master and Margarita by Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov is his most loved book, reports redbook. Written in the Soviet Union under Stalin’s fascist regime, the novel is a dark comedy following the Christian devil’s journey to the USSR.
The Master and Margarita is recognised as one of the essential classics of modern Russian literature. The novel’s vision of Soviet life in the 1930s is so ferociously accurate that it could not be published during its author’s lifetime and appeared only in a censored edition in the 1960s.
Its truths are so enduring that its language has become part of the common Russian speech.
A samizdat version circulated that included parts cut out by official censors, and these were incorporated in a 1969 version published in Frankfurt. The novel has since been published in several languages and editions.
Widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, it is also celebrated as a quintessential example of Soviet satire.
Daniel Radcliffe played the role of Harry Potter from 2001 to 2011, during which he ventured into stage acting.
In 2007, he made his debut in the West End and Broadway production of Equus. He later returned to Broadway in 2011, starring in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Most recently, he co-starred in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, a performance that earned him the 2024 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
In April 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that they would be making a new Harry Potter series based on the original novels by J.K. Rowling. It has been described as a “faithful adaptation.”
The series aims to cover seven seasons, each one dedicated to one of the seven Harry Potter books.
