Dad’s ‘life-changing’ broccoli tip avoids common mistake

Broccoli might appear like a simple vegetable to cook, but it seems many of us haven’t been preparing it “correctly”. Whilst many of us have probably been cooking broccoli for years, one dad has now come to TikTok to show where we’ve been making mistakes for years.

Sidney, a dad who shares life hacks on social media, claimed that placing the entire broccoli in a pan makes the florets easily removable once they’re cooked. In the clip, Sidney said: “Here’s something I didn’t know until I was in my 30s: broccoli should be chopped after it’s boiled?”

He then shows by immersing the broccoli with the floret end downwards in boiling water and, after ten minutes, he effortlessly lifts it out using tongs. With the florets now remarkably tender, Sidney sliced through the whole broccoli in one swift motion, claiming: “It’s already falling off! Look at that, perfect.”

This technique isn’t just quick but also cuts down prep time and reduces the stress involved in cooking. The comments section of Sidney’s video is packed with people stunned by the straightforwardness of the method, with one person admitting: “This has made my life so much easier.”

Another wrote: “I went to culinary school and didn’t know this!” A third put: “42 years old and I haven’t been cooking broccoli properly”.

The healthy recipe app MyRealFood has also backed this approach as a game-changer in the kitchen. In a revealing video shared on their social media, a chef said: “Did you know about this trick for cooking broccoli?

“All you need to do is submerge the head of the broccoli in boiling water and then you can cut it off super-easy and super-quick.” The chef also urged people to eat the stem, describing it as “delicious”, and suggests: “Just slice [the stem] into little slices, put it in the frying pan with some soy sauce, and there you have it.”
