How much do you shell out on your weekly food shop? A young couple in their 20s, who are childless, confessed they spend a staggering £170 on their weekly groceries. They claim many people find it hard to believe them, so decided to prove it on TikTok.
Lucy Sharp, who shares content on the social media platform under the handle @lucysharp_, titled her video: “£170 weekly food shop. Did you even think this was possible for a couple in their 20s with no kids?”
At the beginning of her clip, she humorously suggested that the internet would accuse her of “lying” about the amount they spend on food as the duo embarked on their shopping trip to Tesco.
Her partner stated their budget for the week was £105, and were attempting to “stick to it”.
They utilised the scan and shop feature in Tesco, and had spent £33 early into her video, with her partner jesting: “Don’t you worry when I’m in charge.”
The pair scanned items such as bleach, bread, crisps, chocolate bars, and much more, bringing their total to £57.
However, the final tally of their Tesco shop amounted to £74.83.
Next, they made their way to Lidl, with £31 remaining from their budget – but would they manage to adhere to it successfully?
Filling their Lidl shopping basket with items like mint ice creams, chicken breasts, and a generous supply of chicken goujons for the week, their total came to £20.45.
“The total from the two supermarkets was £98.28, but this doesn’t account for the £75 we’re also spending on 10 meal preps that will arrive tonight,” Lucy clarified.
She went on to say: “So none of the things we purchased from the supermarket included anything for dinner, as we use a meal prep delivery service that delivers twice a week.
“Once on a Sunday with four meals, and again on a Tuesday with six.”
The couple’s total food shop came to £170.28. “Is £170 ridiculous, or is this what you guys are spending?” Lucy queried.
In response, one woman claimed: “Couple in 20s with two cats and it’s £40.”
Lucy retorted: “There’s no way this is true,” given she was spending over four times that amount with her partner.
The woman explained she “meal preps ahead every time,” adding: “We only shop in Lidl, and we cook for four people, so that two portions can be saved for the week after.
“We buy veg in bulk and freeze so it’s convenient for weeks after, such as onions and peppers.”
She also revealed she includes “meat in every meal”.
Another chimed in: “I love a breakdown of what you get because even just for meat for the week, I spend probably £30+.”
Someone else commended: “Finally, a realistic food shop! ! We are about £120/£150! Food is expensive at the moment!”
