Costa Coffee to open more than 10 new cafes after months of closures – full list

Costa Coffee is one of the latest retailers to have closed stores this month following the loss of two sites in London and Edinburgh.

The high street coffee chain axed its branch on Chiswich High Road, London back on February 6 and more recently bid farewell to the Bruntsfield Place cafe on February 15.

A third Costa site is yet to close in Erdington High Street, Birmingham on March 1, but it’s not all bad news for fans of the brand.

Today, the coffee giant announced a new collaboration with Sainsbury’s to open 11 brand-new stores throughout 2024.

The initial expansion will see over £3million invested in communities around the country, generating more than 100 job opportunities.

Costa Coffee already exists in some Tesco superstores including Crooksfoot’s Tesco Extra in Ashford, which saw its long-standing  Harris + Hoole branch replaced by the cafe giant.

A spokesperson claimed that the new collaboration between Sainsbury’s and Costa “will cater to the evolving needs and preferences of supermarket customers, who are looking for convenient, great-quality coffee”.

Nick Ridley, Property Director at Costa Coffee added: “We are excited to join forces with Sainsbury’s, bringing our much-loved Costa Coffee experiences to shoppers nationwide.‌

He continued: “We’re proud that we will soon be able to make a difference to customers looking to catch up with friends and family over lunch or enjoy a beloved Costa coffee after their weekly shop.”

The new store tie-up is a step-forward for the two retailers which already have an existing relationship.

Alongside its Ready to Drink and At Home ranges, Costa Coffee already has more than 1,000 Costa Express machines in Sainsbury’s stores and petrol stations, selling a staggering 10 million cups of coffee in 2023 alone.

One cafe has already started to welcome customers after laying its roots at the Sainsbury’s Farlington Superstore in Portsmouth last Thursday, February 15.

The opening created nine new job roles within the local Portsmouth community and marks the first of its kind in the supermarket chain’s superstores.

New Costa outlets are thought to replace the few remaining Sainsbury’s Cafe’s which were phased out in 2022, when the retailer announced that 200 of them were at risk of closure.
