During the colder months of the year – which aren’t quite over yet – many households in the UK will likely experience issues with damp. This problem is particularly prevalent in rooms such as the bathroom, which tend to be more humid and warm than others.

When the warm indoor air hits the cool glass of the window, water droplets form as condensation on the windows, which can lead to mould appearing if not dealt with. This poses numerous health risks, especially for those with respiratory problems. However, you can nip it in the bud with a free solution known as the German five-minute rule – and it’s so easy to do.

Indoor living experts VonHaus have delved into some of the most effective hacks for banishing condensation at home, which will hopefully help households to ditch the mould and damaged paintwork that can come with it.

And the German five-minute rule, which costs nothing to do, is a sure-fire way to boost the ventilation in your house and minimise the risk of mould.

The experts said: “The idea is simple: fling your windows wide open for five minutes every morning, ideally after cooking or showering, to flush out humid air and replace it with drier, cooler air from outside.”

This might sound counterintuitive, because nobody wants to open up the window when it’s already chilly outside and let even more cold air into the house.

The experts highlighted: “But the science is sound. Warm air holds more moisture than cool air, so by swapping humid indoor air with cold outdoor air, you reduce overall moisture levels indoors once that air warms up.”

If your home already has high humidity issues however, you might need to take a few additional steps.

This is where getting a dehumidifier might be the only reasonable solution. These appliances are designed to suck excess moisture from your home and help maintain optimal indoor humidity levels.

Described by the experts as ‘practical, reliable, and increasingly energy-efficient’, these gadgets do have an upfront cost to think about – but for homes with persistent condensation or mould problems, they are a ‘must’.

Argos has a range of dehumidifiers available such as the Challenge D015B 10 Litre Dehumidifier for £90, or from Amazon, there’s the Cosi Home 25L variety for £129.
