Common household items can be used to clean car and repair minor damage for pennies

As many drivers look for ways to cut the cost of running their car, the vehicle financing company LeaseCar.uk has shared how motorists can use simple household items to clean and fix components of their car.

With the cost of road tax and car insurance on the rise, the last thing that many motorists are considering shelling out hundreds on is vehicle valeting and minor repairs.

However, Tim Alcock, from LeaseCar.uk, noted that many small faults can be fixed in moments using typical items found around the house.

He explained: “There are plenty of unusual items in your house that you can use to clean the inside and outside of your car.

“You don’t need to invest in expensive cleaning materials or pay for a professional to do the work just because items from around the home can do the job just as well.”

One way in which drivers are able to resolve minor damage is by using clear nail polish to remove any small scratches.

LeaseCar.uk noted that, by carefully cleaning the affected area and applying a small amount of polish, the appearance of any minor scratches.

However, whilst this trick can help to mask any damage to the clear coat, scratches that affect the base coat or primer need more professional treatment to resolve.

LeaseCar.uk also noted that simple household items can be used to clean up the interior, such as by rubbing an onion on leather seats.

The company suggested that doing this can help to reduce cracks within the finish on the upholstery, although giving the seats another rub with a damp cloth afterwards can reduce the smell of onion.

Similarly, drivers can remove pet hair from their car’s seats, by dampening a pair of washing up gloves and wiping them over the surface.

Finally, owners of vehicles that feature surface rust were recommended to apply a cloth or sponge that has been soaked with fizzy drink.

Carbonated liquids, such as soft drinks, break down metal oxides almost straight away, meaning drivers can remove any rust in seconds.

The company noted that, after application, drivers should wipe away any debris with another cloth and get the area repainted as soon as possible.
