A sailor was airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard after a sailboat ran aground on an island off the Southern California coast this week.
The Coast Guard received a report around 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, that a 25-foot sailboat had become stranded on Santa Rosa Island.
The island is part of Channel Islands National Park, located off the Santa Barbara County coast. It is California’s second largest island, according to the National Park Service.
Emergency crews later responded to the scene by helicopter, airlifting the sailor from the island and taking them to Camarillo Airport, where they were evaluated by the Ventura County Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
Photos released by the Coast Guard showed the sailboat stranded along the island’s shoreline and rescue crews walking through a grassy area nearby.
The Coast Guard confirmed that the sailboat was later removed by a local towing company and taken to Ventura Harbor.
The California Post reached out to the Coast Guard for more information about what caused the sailboat to run aground and the identity of the person rescued but did not immediately hear back.
