A woman has been praised for sharing her economical methods to dry clothes indoors without turning on her heating. The TikTok user, known online as @livingwiththeevans, has revealed four ways to dry your clothes in winter without the aid of an electrical appliance – a strategy that will help reduce costs.
The mum stated: “Anyone else seem to drown in washing this time of year? We have a tumble dryer, but it’s so expensive to run and I find it shrinks clothes (especially the kids! ) We can’t afford a heated airer or dehumidifier.”
Initially, she advises people to hang clothes on an airer and simply place it outside if it’s dry. However, this isn’t always practical during the rainier months of the year.
So when it’s raining, you can position your airer near an open window to prevent your clothes from acquiring a musty odour.
Alternatively, the housework whiz suggests ‘planning ahead’ and attempting to synchronise your wash with your regular heating schedule. She said: “When the heating is on, put your airer in a small room and close the door.
“For thicker items, she recommends hanging them on a curtain pole with the windows open to expedite the drying process. While her video received over 400 likes, some users reiterated how beneficial a dehumidifier has been for their laundry needs.
One user said: “We use a dehumidifier. Works magic.”
Offering even more advice, TikTok cleaning guru Ann Russell shared her top tips for speeding up the drying process of clothes.
She advised her followers: “Everything is folded neatly and the reason is when the fan goes up, the air goes through, it needs to be able to move, evaporate the water off.
“If it’s too thick or clumpy it won’t get rid of the water and then it will smell.”
One viewer responded to her video, suggesting: “What I find helps is turning them over after a few hours so the air can circulate to areas it may not reach!”
Meanwhile, another added: “Putting stuff on hangers seems to help and spacing them out hanging them on door frames.
“For those dealing with heavier items, another follower recommended: “I’ve found with towels I just hang them over the doors to dry and then within a day or so they are dry and I have a second airer that I use to space out.”
