Clear ice and frost off a windscreen in ‘30 seconds' using sandwich bag tip

Motorists can de-ice their car windscreen in “less than 30 seconds” using a simple sandwich bag this winter.

Social media influencers have demonstrated the simple technique which takes less than a minute to leave glass windscreens completely clear.

The tip is ideal for road users who are caught out by the cold weather and do not have proper de-icing tools or sprays in their garage.

Social media tipsters simply poured warm water into a sandwich bag and tied it up before running the bag over the glass slowly.

The clips show the frost melting instantly, leaving road users with a clear view of the road ahead before setting off.

TikToker @itsnicolejaques said: “Is your windshield iced over? Quick grab a bag of warm water and rub it over the ice to defrost your windshield and windows in seconds.

“Plus the baggy of warm water keeps your hands nice and toasty while you do it. Friendly reminder to never pour warm water directly on your windshield, it’ll crack it.”

TikTok account @Washy_Wash also urged motorists to use the sandwich bag hack as a simple solution to clear glass windscreens in seconds.

Captions on the clip read: “How to de-ice your car windscreen in less than 30 seconds? I am using an Ikea freezer bag filled with one-third cold water and two-thirds boiled water.”

Motorists were quick to praise the solution after trying it out on their own vehicles as the temperature dropped.

@squidgy_81vic posted: “Worked perfectly fine on my car. I think it’s genius.” @cleaning_at83 commented: “Ok so I’ve done this so many times and my window is still intact.”

Meanwhile, TikTok user @barborittta simply added: “This is a great hack.” However, motorists have been urged to never pour hot water directly over the windscreen when temperatures freeze over.

Applying boiling water directly onto the surface of the screen is likely to crack or shatter the glass leading to a costly repair bill.

Motoring experts at Windscreen Wipers explained: “Hot water will cause the glass to expand, which can result in it cracking or even shattering, and cold water can freeze on top of existing ice and frost.

“Both methods can damage your windscreen, sometimes beyond repair. This is why using windscreen washer fluid that is designed to be used in freezing temperatures is important.

“The solution lowers the freezing point of the fluid so you can safely clear your windscreen while driving and not damage your wipers or the windscreen.”
