A cleaning expert has revealed her list of four products you should never waste your money on. Lynsey Crombie, known as the “Queen of Clean” regularly appears on ITV’s This Morning as well as the Today Show in Ireland and Channel 5’s Gadget Show. When it comes to cleaning, one thing everyone should know is that sometimes, less is more, Lynsey explains.
While it can be easy to get sucked into TikTok videos showing creators using hundreds of different products to clean one item, this isn’t always necessary. In fact, there are some items Lynsey avoids completely, preferring a more natural alternative that she claims works even better than sprays and foams sold in pretty bottles.
For instance, she shuns air fresheners when it comes to topping up the cleaning cupboard. Lynsey explains: “I’ve never felt the need for them, instead open the windows and let that fresh air flow through.”
Another product that Lynsey doesn’t see the point in is floor wipes. She told followers on TikTok to “ditch them” as a spray mop is “easier on your knees”, eco-friendly, and “keeps the floor streak-free”.
Lynsey also said that she has “never been a fan” of Viakal and instead prefers to use white vinegar. “It’s gentle, effective, and removes limescale and hard water with ease,” the cleaning expert told her TikTok audience.
Then she showed how she soaks a paper towel with white vinegar before wrapping it around the affected area – such as on the base of her tap, and around the spout.
Finally, Lynsey chooses to avoid “harsh oven cleaners”, explaining: “If your oven hasn’t been cleaned in over a year, you may possibly need them. But if you keep on top of it, it’s a simple mix of lemon and bicarbonate of soda; these do a fantastic job.”
To keep your oven shiny and in tip-top shape, you simply need to squeeze the lemon and bicarbonate of soda together to create a “foamy scrub” before applying all over.
Lynsey said: “My oven isn’t filthy but even with regular cleaning it still picks up dirt and grime; this method works perfectly. Simplest products really are the best.”
Lemon can be used around the house for several other cleaning jobs, according to Lynsey. For example, you can place a few lemon halves in a bowl of cold water in the microwave and put the machine on full power for five minutes. The expert said that this will “release the grease” which will make it easier to remove any grime with a cloth.
If there are areas in your home affected by rust, you can combat this by mixing lemon with salt to make a paste. After applying to the rust and scrubbing, leave the mixture for a few minutes before rinsing away with warm water.
