It’s that time of year when allergies are at an all-time high, and if you suffer from them, it’s important to make sure you can evade triggers while at home. Cleaning expert Sara Aparacio from Homeaglow has shared her tips and easy ways for people to avoid the buildup of allergens in their homes and help to evade triggers when inside the home. One of her top tips is to damp dust, which will help ensure that it is removed effectively.
Dusting frequently will help prevent buildup, but you also need to do it in a way that captures any allergens in the home. She says: “When dusting, I use a lightly dampened microfiber cloth, as this helps to catch the dust rather than spread it around the surface and home.
“Using an appropriate surface cleaner is also an option, but a dampened microfiber cloth is often just as effective, especially if you’re doing regular cleans and there is minimal buildup.”
Sara adds that once you’ve finished dusting and cleaning, you should wash the cloth thoroughly and let it dry so it is ready for the next use.
But this isn’t the only tip Sara gave. She also said if you suffer from allergies, the best practice during any cleaning is to wear a mask or covering over your face to avoid breathing in any dust or allergens you stir up during your cleaning.
She also recommends vacuuming your home at least once a week, as a monthly or single-seasonal clean isn’t enough to eliminate allergens.
It’s important to vacuum at least once or twice a week to stay on top of dust and allergen buildup.
Focusing on areas of the home where you spend a lot of time, such as your bedroom and living areas, be sure to vacuum carpets thoroughly using a vacuum cleaner with a small-particle or high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
Another tip is to wash your bedding weekly, you should already be washing your bedding every week, but during allergy seasons, you will often find that your sleep and symptoms improve if you wash your sheets and bedding more often.
You should use cases and covers on your pillows and mattresses to help prevent dust mites, and wash sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and duvet covers at least once a week on warm washes.
By making these small changes, you’ll be able to allergy proof your home meaning you’ll be able to get some respite while inside.
