Spider activity typically increases in the summer due to the mating season for certain species taking place in the late summer to early autumn. Additionally the warmer temperatures and increased insect populations provide more food and better conditions for spiders. Unfortunately with that comes an increased risk of the eight-legged pests finding their ways into homes, and once they’re in its hard to get out.

Prevention is key to a spider-free home, and luckily a cleaning expert on TikTok has revealed three ways to completely “spider-proof” your home and even better, the easy tricks use natural ingredients. Following these simple tips will ensure that your home is one that spiders will turn away from.

The first two tips she shared with viewers involved spraying a peppermint oil and water mixture around windows and placing cinnamon sticks around your home.

Anna added: “They also dislike the smell of cinnamon so dotting some cinnamon sticks around your home will keep them away too.”

The TikTok creator’s final piece of advice for banishing spiders from your home is adding orange oil to your mop, which according to the expert also helps with keeping insects out of your home too.

The video gained a over 121,000 likes and more than 500 comments with people, thanking Anna for the video, as well as requesting for more tips.

One person commented: “This is definitely needed! Spiders in Australia are not ideal.”

Another wrote: “Didn’t know about the cinnamon or orange oil! Fab tips”

A third dubbed the tips as “genius”. However questioned whether if it was suitable for those who have pet — a concern that many others touched on.

Many people warned that despite the tips being beneficial they are not pet-friendly. Therefore those with any pets should avoid using the spider-proof cleaning hacks as some of the components used are either completely toxic to pet or can be if consumed in large quantities.
