A beloved adventure classic for fans of historical epics is set to leave Netflix next month.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), starring Kevin Costner in the titular role, will be removed from the streaming platform on April 1, 2025. Directed by Kevin Reynolds, this film reimagines the legendary outlaw’s tale, offering a mix of action, romance, and heroism set in 12th-century England.
The movie follows Robin Hood, a nobleman turned outlaw, who returns to England after fighting in the Crusades. Upon his return, he finds his land taken by the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Alan Rickman) and the English crown in turmoil.
As Robin embarks on a quest for justice, he forms an alliance with an unlikely group of companions, including the skilled and fearless Little John (Nick Brimble), the wise and pious Friar Tuck (Michael McShane), and the fiercely loyal Will Scarlett (Christian Slater).
Together, they wage a rebellion against the Sheriff’s tyranny, while Robin also seeks to reclaim his ancestral home and win the heart of the fair Lady Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).
The film blends swashbuckling adventure with reflective moments, making it a standout among other Robin Hood adaptations, and Robin’s transformation from a battle-hardened crusader to a noble hero reflects themes of redemption, justice, and loyalty.
Upon its release in 1991, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was a massive box office success, grossing over $390 million globally. The film’s combination of action, romance, and a compelling cast made it a summer blockbuster hit and a favorite among audiences worldwide.
While some critics had mixed reviews regarding Costner’s English accent, they were unanimous in praising the film’s thrilling action sequences and the depth of its characters.
A major factor in the film’s enduring popularity is its iconic musical score by Bryan Adams. The song “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” which became the film’s theme song, not only topped charts around the world but also went on to win several prestigious awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves earned several award nominations, most notably for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards, where Bryan Adams’ hit single was nominated alongside a nod for Best Visual Effects. It also garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
If you haven’t seen Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves yet – or if you want to revisit this classic – you have until April 1st before it’s removed from Netflix’s catalogue.
