Nando’s has become something of institution in Britain, a port of call for hungry diners seeking its distinctive spicy dishes. It’s even popular among royalty, with Prince Harry once popping into a Fulham branch with his protection officers.

But while some swear by the South African chain for a quick and easy meal, others have suggested that another high street giant known for its chicken is superior. A punter who visited a branch of Pepe’s Piri Piri in Greenwhich back in 2021 declared it was “better than Nando’s” in a review on TripAdvisor, giving his experience a five-star review.

“I’ve ordered a few things from here and the food has always been great, and on time,” they wrote. “I would recommend if you have not already been.”

Another reviewer said they “couldn’t agree more”, adding that it was “Definitely worth a visit if your passing by.”

Pepe’s Piri Piri was founded in London back in 2004, and has more than 200 branches, most of which are in the UK.

Meanwhile, Nando’s reportedly has 1,200 restaurants across 30 countries as of May 2020, and more than 470 as of January, 2025, according to Statista.

But while Nando’s may be more well known, debate rages online about which outlets have the best chicken, or are the best value.

The subreddit UK Food recently asked its 308,000 members which of the two they think is the best value.

One user said: “Both are good but id says Pepes its got more variety in food and id say it fills me up better than Nando’s.”

But another wrote: “Pepes fills me up more but I prefer Nando’s.”

A third insisted that “Pepe’s rice box is truly unmatched”.

Meanwhile, others insist fellow competitor Roosters bests Nando’s on taste and price.
