Chef shares the ‘only way’ to keep potatoes fresh for longer – avoids them sprouting too

Food storage hacks are very useful for keeping fresh produce from going bad quickly.

One food item that needs to be stored properly so they can last for months is potatoes.

The humble and dependable spud has to be one of the top kitchen staples of all time, loved for its versatility – giving us creamy mash, fluffy baked potatoes, crunchy chips, crispy potatoes, and much more.

To avoid them sprouting and wrinkling, executive chef at The Sipp on South Lamar Will Brady has shared the best way to store potatoes.

He claimed that location and ventilation are “key” factors for ensuring “proper potato storage”.

Will explained: “The only way to keep potatoes fresh for longer is to store them in a cool, dry place with ventilation, such as the kitchen counter or the pantry away from sunlight, or in a cellar.”

It’s a good idea to keep the potatoes as far from sunlight as possible as too much light can trigger greening – this makes potatoes taste bitter.

As Will mentioned, ventilation is important so don’t keep potatoes in the plastic bags they come in from the supermarkets.

Instead, use a ventilated container like a mesh bag or crate to allow air circulation.

A temperature of around three degrees is the ideal way to keep your potatoes cool and out of direct light until you’re ready to cook them.

Will disagrees with putting potatoes in the fridge. He said: “It’s not recommended to store potatoes in the fridge, where the starches can turn into sugar.”

He also shared that it’s important to “store your potatoes away from onions”, as this “will cause them to sprout”.

Onions produce a high level of ethylene gas, which will cause potatoes to ripen and go bad before you’re ready to use them.

Potatoes can also affect onions badly too as they have a high moisture content that can cause onions to liquefy and leak.
