Prime Video viewers are flocking to watch a film that’s been hailed a ‘cheesy masterpiece’ and compared to a classic title.
The Meg 2: The Trench has only just landed on the streaming platform’s catalogue and has already become the most-watched title amongst users.
Currently, it sits at the top of the online giant’s viewing charts, surpassing both television programmes and films.
This means it’s outperforming Clarkson’s Farm, Neighbours alongside espionage thriller Butterfly and romantic comedy The Map That Leads To You.
The 2023 sequel follows on from the 2018 original, featuring Jason Statham reprising his role as Jonas Taylor, reports the Mirror.
Taylor spearheads a research expedition on an exploratory plunge into the ocean’s most profound depths.
Their journey descends into mayhem when a sinister mining enterprise jeopardises their operation and thrusts them into a life-or-death struggle for survival.
Facing off against enormous, ancient sharks and ruthless environmental destroyers, they must outpace, outwit and outmanoeuvre their pitiless hunters.
Critics weren’t particularly impressed, awarding it just a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviewers appeared to take issue with the production’s visual effects and perceived simplification of the script.
Nevertheless, audiences tell a different story, with viewers giving it a 72% rating.
One fan expressing their views wrote online: “I liked this sequel much more than the first film. More action and suspense, and an improvement in every way. The last third of the film was very well done.”
One viewer likened it to iconic monster films, stating: “The Jurassic Park on water is here and it’s a splash of terror. Great movie for shark fans and nostalgic to Tremors fans as I am one I noted quite a few scenes. Better story than the first, more suspense than the first too. Best Shark sequel movie since Sharknado 2 and Jaws 4.”
Many were pleased with the film’s action sequences and its ability to not take itself too seriously. One fan enthused: “A feel-good exciting cheesy masterpiece of silly and over the top action adventure served with subtle parody satire and surgical wit. A must enjoyable see thrilling parade of reptiles, bad guys and good guys. So much action nonsense goes on but it lands on its feet as a score of 10.”
Another was delighted purely because of the film’s action star lead. They remarked: “I am a huge Jason Statham fan and will go to just about anything he is in. As such, I saw the first Meg movie and was very excited for this one. After the first one though, I wasn’t sure how exactly they were going to surpass it in action.”
They added: “This movie…this is how they did it…and, in my opinion, as a sequel, it passed with flying colours. If you too either: like action movies, are a Jason Statham fan, and/or loved the first Meg movie, then you will love this one.”
Meanwhile, a more realistic verdict by someone who enjoyed it despite flaws pointed out in reviews stated: “This movie is very obviously stupid but you already know that. My only question going in was: is this movie going to embrace the absurdity of its own premise and give us the schlock we deserve?”.
“The answer is yes! Apart from some slightly boring exposition in the first 20 minutes, the movie whisks you quickly from one action set piece to the next. Most of these were very fun, and some were genuinely clever in a way that made me wonder why other more “serious” action movies don’t share the same creativity as this glorious farce.”
