Cheapest UK summer staycation is seaside town with ‘fine golden sand’ | Travel News | Travel

With the cost of last-minute summer holidays threatening to stretch household budgets, many Brits are turning their attention to the UK coast for a wallet-friendly weekend escape. According to new research by credit card provider Aqua, Blackpool has emerged as the number one affordable staycation this summer.

Famed for its nostalgic charm, iconic arcades and classic seafront vibe, Blackpool takes the top spot thanks to an average overnight stay costing just £82 — comfortably undercutting rivals like Portsmouth (£108) and Eastbourne (£112). From the world-famous Blackpool Tower to three piers lined with fun activities for the whole family, there’s more than enough to do. The Golden Mile, still as lively as ever, has plenty to do, including visiting Madame Tussauds, the Sandcastle Waterpark, or enjoying some fish and chips.

TripAdvisor reviews praised the town for its laid-back fun and ample sandy beaches.

One user said: “The waterfront promenade offers stunning views of the windy Irish Sea. Huge beach with fine golden sand, very clean, as well as clean water where I gladly bathed.

“The city offers many clubs — pubs, restaurants, bars, even with live music — and you will gladly stroll the streets.

“Spectacular Central Pier with the big Ferris wheel and the nearby Blackpool Tower all lit up. I was only there three days for a convention, but would stay there again for a longer vacation.”

Another reviewer commented: “This was my first trip to Blackpool and certainly won’t be the last.

“We spend a few full days in the main part of Blackpool and, of course, on the beach! There are three piers and lots to do around the beach.

“We drank at a lovely local bar, enjoyed a picnic next to the sea and wandered up and down the promenade.

“We even had fun while it was raining on the seafront.”

The iconic Blackpool Tower is always a must-visit, with its panoramic views from the top, ballroom dancing events, and family-friendly circus shows.

Meanwhile, those looking for thrills can head straight to the Pleasure Beach, which has a mix of classic rides and bigger rollercoasters.
