Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater underwent successful ankle surgery.

The Pro Bowler had a tight-rope procedure done with the purpose of accelerating his return from a high-ankle sprain. Slater, who sustained the ankle injury in Week 4 against the Seahawks, will be placed on injured reserve and begin rehabbing.

The Chargers are staring at an 0-5 record as the team prepares to face the Broncos, a divisional rival, without their top offensive tackle. The slumping squad has gone winless through four weeks of the season and is in jeopardy of continuing the losing streak against a top defense in Denver.

Additionally, Broncos coach Sean Payton has decided to call offensive plays for the first time this season, which will likely improve Denver’s performance.

The Chargers have yet to find a rhythm on offense as Mike McDaniel’s scheme appears to be tougher to grasp than many expected. Quarterback Justin Herbert looks uncomfortable in the new-look offense and has few weapons to rely on.

The Chargers’ defense has performed surprisingly well under new coordinator Chris O’Leary after a worrisome season opener against the Cardinals. But overall, the entire team looks discombobulated, and Week 5 will be another chance for the Chargers to get their first win of the season.

The Chargers will have to make do without Slater, though.
