A woman was left stunned when her cat returned home five years after disappearing, looking completely unrecognisable.
Janine Yarrell, 44, had given up hope of ever seeing her pet, Bubba, again after she vanished without a trace and a social media appeal yielded no results.
However, Bubba, now aged 12, has since returned home, looking very different from the cat Janine and her husband Rob had rescued from a centre.
It is believed that Bubba had been living as a stray in their hometown of Ashford, Kent, since 2019.
She was spotted hiding under a car near Janine and Rob’s home on Tuesday (November 12). A local resident posted a photo of the cat on Facebook, leading to Janine’s discovery of Bubba.
“I honestly didn’t think I’d see her again,” said Janine, who was reunited with Bubba on Wednesday (November 13). “As she’s 12 now and used to the creature comforts of being at home. So I couldn’t believe my eyes when her photo was posted on Facebook. We checked her microchip details and now she’s finally back home.”
Despite her matted fur, Bubba is in relatively good shape considering her time missing. Janine believes Bubba had been surviving on the streets for the past five years, possibly being fed occasionally.
Janine added: “Let this be a strong message to all owners to check their pets’ microchip details are up to date. And above all never, ever give up hope. I’d like to thank everyone who shared her photos across social media.”
Yorkshire Cat Rescue offers guidance for those with missing felines, suggesting that owners should check with neighbours, put up posters, and notify local vets and rescue centres.
They further advise: “Once your cat is less scared they will be hungry and drawn to the smell of food. Although be aware other cats and wildlife may be eating the food.
“Cats have a good sense of smell and the familiar scents of home can help them find their way back, especially if he or she is missing in an area he isn’t familiar with. Leave unwashed items of clothing, the cat’ litter tray and bedding outside.”
