Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from next event after US Open triumph over Jannik Sinner | Tennis | Sport

Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of his next tennis event after beating Jannik Sinner in the US Open final. The young Spaniard won his sixth Grand Slam title with an emphatic victory over his Italian rival on Sunday night. It saw him gain revenge following his defeat to the same opponent at Wimbledon earlier this year.

The two players have faced each other in the last three Grand Slam finals, with Alcaraz winning twice and Sinner prevailing at SW19. The former was due to play in another event later this week, having been named in the Spain squad for their Davis Cup qualifier against Denmark. However, that is no longer the case with Alcaraz pulling himself out.

He will not take part in the match due to fatigue and his desire to take some time away from the court, according to Spanish outlet Cadena SER. It is said that Jaume Munar has been called up to replace Alcaraz in the squad.

Marcel Granollers is also a doubt for Spain, with the 39-year-old set to undergo tests on a potential foot injury in Barcelona. It means that captain David Ferrer has been put in a tough position ahead of the match.

Alcaraz is still expected to play in the upcoming Laver Cup, where he will represent Team Europe alongside Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli.

After that, he is scheduled to compete at the China Open, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters before taking part in the year-end ATP Finals.

Alcaraz was left delighted with his performance in the US Open final after his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero said that he had been faultless against Jannik Sinner.

“He’s right, I think I played perfect,” said Alcaraz. “If I want to win, you know, the US Open, if I want to beat Jannik, I have to play perfect, and I think he was right.”
