Speaking for Republic, Graham Smith said: “Andrew remains accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be stripped of all titles and his Navy rank and should face a criminal investigation.
“Not using silly medieval titles is not a punishment that fits the offences. This whole story has been painted as about embarrassing the royals, when it must focus on justice for girls abused by rich and powerful men.
“The idea that losing pointless titles is a fit punishment is sickening and must be challenged. The royals have been covering for and protecting Andrew for two decades. The public has a right to know who knew what and when.
“This isn’t one rotten apple, it’s a rotten institution that circles the wagons and does as little as it can in response to serious scandal.”
The Daily Express hs contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Friday evening, Prince Andrew said: “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.
“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
