Cadbury has announced it will start wrapping its chocolate bars in 80% certified recycled plastic. The change in packaging marks a milestone for the company in a move towards becoming more sustainable.
More than 300 chocolate bars per year will be wrapped up in the new material, which is enough to stretch the length of the UK more than 40 times and will save the equivalent of 600 tonnes of post-consumer plastic. The roll out is live on shelves across the UK and Ireland now, with the ambition for all of Cadbury’s products that are made and sold in the UK and Ireland to be wrapped in the recycled material by the end of the year.

“We know that sustainability is important to consumers, so by moving to 80% certified recycled plastic – and wrapping more than 300 million bars this year – we are not only helping to give flexible plastic a second life, but also helping Cadbury fans enjoy their favourite snacks, knowing they’re doing something positive for the planet.”
The new 80% certified recycled packaging has been sourced using advanced recycling technology and this approach can be used to turn used plastic packaging back into food-grade, flexible plastic packaging.
The initiative uses a mass balance approach, meaning that Cadbury has sourced and allocated an amount of recycled material that meets ISCC’s (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) requirements, to produce the new packaging wrapped in 80% recycled plastic.
With bars including Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel 120g, Cadbury Fruit and Nut 180g and Cadbury Dairy Milk 360g, all available on-shelf in the new certified recycled packaging, the transition into becoming more sustainable has begun and by the end of the year Cadbury and its consumers will be making steps towards helping the planet.
