Buckingham Palace rushed to fix a glaring error made on King Charles’s official social media channel in a post made about attending the Mey Highland Games in Caithness. The Palace incorrectly made a blunder involving the name of King Charles’s grandmother.

Queen Elizabeth II’s mother was always referred to by her full title, ‘Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’, and not just ‘The Queen Mother’. The palace’s incorrect statement on X first read: “The King has attended the Mey Highland Games in Caithness! First established in the village of Mey in 1970 to celebrate the 70th Birthday of The Queen Mother, The Mey Games have since become an annual tradition.”

Just one minute later, the post on X was corrected to read: “The King has attended the Mey Highland Games in Caithness! First established in the village of Mey in 1970 to celebrate the 70th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, The Mey Games have since become an annual tradition.”

The monarch, 76, was spotted at the weekend without Queen Camilla as he took in the annual colourful festivities held in Caithness.

His Majesty looked dapper in his red, blue and green tartan kilt, and he also wore his a beige waistcoat and jacket. At one point the King was seen enjoying a whisky before he witnessed the events involving pipe bands, highland dancing and track events.

Charles has always had a strong love for Scotland, similarly to his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, having spent many summers at Balmoral with the Royal Family. He is also often wearing kilts when visiting the nation for engagements.

Under the post on X, many users have commented on Charles’s attendance. One wrote: “Happy Heavenly Birthday to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.”

Another fan of the games wrote: “Such a beautiful tradition started by The Queen Mother, and amazing to see it still going strong.”

Although Queen Camilla did not join her husband for the event, the monarch was not alone as he was joined by his cousin, Lady Sarah Chatto, and her son, Samuel, who brought his girlfriend, Eleanor Ekserdjian, with him.

Lady Sarah is the late Princess Margaret’s only daughter and shares a close bond with the monarch.

In 2002, King Charles succeeded his grandmother as Chieftain of the games and attends each year during his summer break in Caithness.

Today, the Mey Highland Games is an independent charity and continues to be held on the first Saturday of August.
