BT, Sky and Virgin Media beaten on price by rival – with one important catch

If your broadband is sluggish and expensive, you don’t necessarily have to struggle on. While household names such as BT, Sky and Virgin Media might be the go-to brands when it comes to hooking a high speed fibre connection up to your home, there are plenty of alternative providers that often undercut the big players when it comes to price.

One such internet service provider (ISP) is Community Fibre, an excellent company whose services I have used in the past. It is currently running a flash sale where it’s offering 500Mbps full fibre broadband for just £20 per month.

That’s cheaper than BT, Sky and Virgin Media, who are currently charging £34.99, £30 and £27.99 respectively for their 500Mbps broadband packages.

The catch? Community Fibre only serves London, where it is available in every borough. If you live outside of the capital, I’m afraid you’re out of luck.

But if you’re a Londoner, I do not hesitate in recommending Community Fibre, which uses its own fibre network rather than tapping into the BT-owned Openreach network. I was a customer for two years when I lived in west London, and the service was superb, with a lightning fast connection.

The £20 package comes with no setup fee, even if an engineer needs to come round to hook you up to the network. As with all broadband contracts in the UK, Community Fibre will raise your prices annually mid-contract. This means the package will go up to £22 per month from April 2026, and up again to £24 per month from April 2027.

Even after these two price rises, that’s still cheaper than what any of BT, Sky or Virgin Media are charging today – and those contracts will also incur price rises.

The Community Fibre deal is for a 24 month contract, so make sure you can afford to sign up and pay for the duration. The firm is not currently offering its 500Mbps plan on a 12 month plan.

“Ideal for live streaming ultra high definition (UHD) content, as well as crystal-clear video calls without your signal dropping off for those working from home,” is how Community Fibre describes this package. “Average wired download/upload speeds of 500 Mbps, with expected WiFi download/upload speeds of 250 – 450 Mbps.

“Those wanting to make the switch will have to be quick, as Community Fibre’s 500 Mbps at £20/pm promotion ends at 23.59pm 5th August 2025. New customers benefiting from this deal will also see no set up fees as well as router included when they join. ”

Though Community Fibre is currently confined to London, it has grown in recent months to serve the whole city. It has also been labelled as the UK’s Greatest of Great Value Broadband Provider by consumer review brand Which?.
