Brussels burns as farmers furious with the EU storm city on key summit day

In a dramatic showdown at the heart of the European Union, convoys filled with furious farmers, piloting heavy-duty tractors, descended upon EU headquarters to demand action on their grievances related to soaring costs, stifling regulations, and bureaucratic hurdles.

The atmosphere was charged as hundreds of farmers, fuelled by weeks of pent-up frustration, aimed to have their voices heard by EU leaders during a summit on Thursday.

The farmers, seeking respite from what they perceive as excessive challenges, took drastic measures to ensure their protests couldn’t be ignored. Overnight, they gathered around blazing pallets to fortify themselves against the cold, before roaring into the Belgian capital at the crack of dawn.

The cacophony of engines, firecrackers, and blaring horns shattered the early morning tranquillity, signalling a symbolic climax to their persistent protests across the bloc.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo acknowledged the farmers’ forceful presence, acknowledging that their concerns had managed to infiltrate the agenda of a summit originally intended to focus on providing financial aid to Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.

“We also need to make sure that they can get the right price for the high-quality products that they provide. We also need to make sure that the administrative burden that they have remains reasonable,” said De Croo, whose country presently holds the EU presidency.
