Brits urged to sprinkle salt on lawns in October

There is a surprising reason to consider adding salt to your garden lawns in October. However, you need to ensure it is the right type of salt. There are several jobs that British gardeners have been advised to complete in October. These include surprising tasks, such as pouring milk down their drains and sprinkling chilli powder around their gardens. One expert has revealed why Epsom salts should be sprinkled on lawns in October.

Epsom salts are quite different from regular table salt, and it is important to know the distinction. Epsom salts are made of magnesium sulfate, while table salt is sodium chloride. This is why Epsom salts are used for various health and wellness purposes, such as in baths and body scrubs. It turns out that it has many benefits in the garden, as well. This is due to its high concentration of sulfur and magnesium, which grass and other garden plants greatly benefit from when it comes to growth.

Gardening guru Kellie from the Sustainable Living Association explained: “Have you heard that Epsom salts are some of the best DIY autumn lawn fertilisers? They contain sulfur and magnesium, both of which are compounds that grass and many other plants favour.

“These are some of the many benefits of using Epsom salts as the best lawn fertiliser, and it’s no wonder people have been using these salts for many years.”

This means that Epsom salts can help keep grass thriving in October as the weather gets colder and we approach a cold and bitter winter. To use Epsom salt in your garden, you can simply add a tablespoon of it to a gallon of water and spread it over your grass.

Doing this now will give lawns plenty of time to absorb the nutrients before winter sets in, helping them survive the colder months. However, if the first frost has hit, then it is too late. So October is the perfect time to complete this job.

Epsom salt provides your grass with nutrients it may be missing. After a record-setting summer of heatwaves in the UK, your grass might not be in the best shape. This can be a good idea if you want to recover and stay healthy throughout the winter.

If your lawn suffered greatly during the summer, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give it more Epsom salt later in the month, as long as it is before the first frost hits.
