Brits visiting Spain have been warned not to make a typical mistake while in the country. A YouTuber has shared his top tips for being a tourist in Spain and among them is one way to avoid a common mistake when it comes to the sunny country’s public transport. Tourists from Britain flock to Spain every year for their holidays, many opting for resorts in the south of the country while others head to popular cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
One of the traveller’s top tips is to “think twice” before taking an Uber or a taxi around cities like Madrid, because you might actually be wasting your time and your money. Instead, walking or taking public transport might be the better, more efficient option for you. “If you’re thinking of not using public transport [and] you’re going to jump in a taxi or an Uber, maybe think twice,” he said.
“I’ve seen people walk out of a tapas bar and jump right into a cab to get back to their hotel and it takes them longer in the cab to get there than if they were just going to walk or take public transport because of the compactness and the traffic in these historic centres all over Spain.”
However, there are “unspoken rules” that video creator Spain Revealed points that tourists often don’t realise. Among them standing on the right side of the escalators when using the underground metro.
There is a similar rule in big cities like London where you have huge numbers of people trying to navigate these underground stations every day, where tourists can often irritate city dwellers looking to pass them by.
As well as this, the YouTuber said that tourists should only use an elevator in one of these stations if they need to, such as having mobility issues, carrying suitcases, or having a child in a pram. “They are reserved for people who really need them,” he said.
He continues: “Remember, when you’re getting on the train, make sure you stand back to let people get out first. Otherwise, someone might give you a little shove.” He says that they might also intruct you to let people out first before getting on the train.
