Brits’ Spain holidays ruined as they’re told there’s ‘chance of snow’ | Europe | Travel

Britain is currently enjoying a blissfully warm week with temperatures soaring above 20C, but for those who jetted off to Spain in search of guaranteed sunshine, the reality has unexpectedly been quite the opposite.

Disgruntled holidaymakers have taken to social media to share their dismay after facing a deluge of rain instead of the Spanish sun. Among the disappointed tourists is Jodie Lauren, who uploaded a video showing the extent of the downpour at her resort in Mallorca, which completely disrupted her relaxation plans.

“Don’t trust the Mallorca weather apps,” she posted bitterly alongside the footage on TikTok, ironically adding: “It’s okay I enjoyed the bingo anyway.” Her video contrasted the grim reality of the relentless rain soaking the outdoor pool area with her phone’s weather forecast, which optimistically predicted clear skies and 19C warmth throughout the day.

Beth Sell found herself in a similarly damp situation in Malaga, capturing footage of relentless rainfall at her retreat. Despite the dismal weather ruining her trip, she managed to quip: “When it’s raining on holiday but 25 degrees back home!”

Regrettably, the forecast indicates a continued dreary weekend across Spain and the Balearic Islands, with expectations of heavy rain and even hail. Certain areas are bracing for a Status Orange weather warning, anticipating thunderstorms particularly in northern regions, with high-altitude areas even facing a potential snow.

To add insult to injury, one TikTok user couldn’t help but respond to Jodie’s holiday mishap by boasting: “Blazing sunshine and 21C here in Birmingham!” Another pondered: “Has the Balearics turned into Britain with its weather?” Meanwhile, a third joked: “At least you won’t get sunburnt this time!”.

In a similar vein, reacting to Beth’s unfortunate Spanish getaway, another user shared their experience, saying: “In Nerja it’s terrible. Can’t see a thing and it’s cold.” A second person declared: “So glad we went last week.”

While a third reflected: “So annoying when it rains on a holiday, but it is good for nature, bad for you though.”

Meanwhile a statement shared to X by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET on Saturday morning (May 10) read: “We’re expanding warnings to more areas in the north and east of the Peninsula. Showers will be locally very strong, with strong winds and hail. The danger is significant in the areas with an orange warning.”

Furthermore, AEMET underscored the severity of the weather with an additional alert: “Orange level warning for rain and/or storms today in Navarre, Valencia, La Rioja, Castile-La Mancha, and Aragon.”

To top it off, the agency offered a rather grim weekend forecast for the Canary Islands: “Occasional very strong south-westerly gusts are possible on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of the mountainous islands, leeward midlands, and peaks of Gran Canaria, especially during the midday hours; very strong gusts will be more likely on peaks of Tenerife and La Palma.”
