The price of a popular beer brand has increased across a number of British supermarkets including Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s. A new analysis frm The Grocer has found that the price of many San Miguel supermarket offerings have gone up by quite a bit – as much as 38 percent in some cases. Five out of 24 San Miguel drinks stocked in the UK’s four biggest supermarkets (Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s, Asda and Tesco) rose while only one decreased.

The single 6660ml bottles of San Miguel saw the largest increase in pre-promotional price. It went up by an average of 34p – or 15.5% – to £2.55 a bottle since January 1. Sainsbury’s had the biggest price increase for this product with the cost for customers shooting up from £1.99 to £2.75 since the start of the year. Meawhile, the price in Morrison’s went from £2.20 a bottle to £2.50. Asda changed the size of the bottles of San Miguel they sell from the 660ml bottle to a 620ml one, and cut the price from £2.05 to £1.94.

Multipacks of the beer have also been affected, The Grocer says, reporting that the pre-promotional price of 4x440ml cans of San Miguel had increased by an average of 4.6% (or 26p) to £5.94.

The pack of four beers had gone from £5.45 to £6 in Sainsbury’s, marking an increase of 10.1 percent. Meanwhile, the supermarket increased the price of larger packs containing 10 440ml beers by 10p across its stores with the average price now at £13.20.

Both Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s said that these price increases were due to a number of factors while Asda did not respond to The Grocer.

A BBG spokesperson told the Grocer, “While we do not set retail prices, we are aware of recent increases driven largely by government imposed duties and new packaging taxes, which have increased production and distribution costs across the industry.

“San Miguel remains a consumer favourite, and we look forward to activating it this year with exciting marketing and trade campaigns.”

San Miguel is part of the Budweiser Brewing Group (BBG), which announced that it would be responsible for distributing San Miguel from January 1, 2025 after it took over the brand.
