Brits attempt to avoid sickness by doing these key things during flu season

Over a third of adults would switch train carriages if they heard someone coughing or sneezing nearby, research has revealed.

In an attempt to stay healthy, one in three Brits confess to banishing their partner to a separate bed when they’re unwell, and the majority will cancel plans with friends or family members who show signs of illness.

Furthermore, 13% would request a sick colleague to leave work if they showed up with a cold, and 20% avoid public transport entirely during peak cold and flu seasons.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 57% will go to ‘great lengths’ to avoid catching anything. For 47%, this includes avoiding shaking hands with others and using a tissue for door handles.

If they found themselves in a lift with someone spluttering and coughing without covering their mouth, 27% would try and hold their breath until they could escape. Meanwhile, nearly half would likely leave a venue if the person serving them appeared to be ill.

“People have become more health conscious than ever before, and make no mistake, this is a very good thing ” said Dr Zoe Williams.

She added: “it wasn’t so many generations ago that people weren’t even aware to wash their hands regularly to avoid illness.Taking steps like avoiding public transport, carrying hand sanitiser and avoiding people who are unwell can help keep you healthy throughout winter.

“Simple habits such as maintaining nasal health and hygiene can also play a key role in being able to breathe well and feel your best during colder months.”

Interestingly, it was revealed that two thirds of people feel more self-conscious than usual when they’re feeling under the weather and have to be around others. However, 15% ‘ignore’ the issues and hope they dissipate quickly.

A spokesperson for Sterimar, who conducted the research, added: “As the colder months drag on, it’s no surprise that many people are doing everything they can to stay healthy and avoid the dreaded winter bugs.

“From bundling up against the chill to loading up on vitamin C, people are taking extra precautions to keep colds and flu at bay.

“Good hygiene, a balanced diet, and plenty of rest all play a crucial role in supporting the immune system and helping to fend off seasonal illnesses.”
