Britons are being urged to take extra care on the roads today as dense fog blankets large parts of the UK, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions.

With millions expected to travel, authorities are warning motorists to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary journeys.

In south-east Wales, police have advised against travelling between Kilgetty and Red Roses unless “absolutely necessary” due to particularly thick fog in the area.

The Met Office has also cautioned that fog patches could settle on roads across the country, significantly reducing visibility.

The RAC estimates that 3.8 million drivers will be on the move as people return home from Christmas getaways.

They recommend avoiding major roads between 10am and 3pm when traffic is expected to be at its busiest.

Today’s weather is predicted to remain cloudy across most of the UK, with mist and fog persisting throughout England and Wales.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see rain in some areas, while the far northwest may enjoy brighter but chilly conditions with isolated showers.

Looking ahead, the Met Office forecasts thick clouds tonight, with mist and fog lingering in England and Wales. Rain is expected in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the far northwest remains drier.

Tomorrow will start cloudy and murky in England and Wales, with rain in the northwest gradually moving southeast.

Brighter, colder weather with sunny spells and blustery showers will follow, setting the stage for a wintry start to the new year with hill snow and blustery conditions in the north.

Drivers are reminded to use fog lights where necessary, reduce speed, and allow extra time for their journeys to ensure a safe trip.
