Brits planning to drive in Europe have been issued an urgent warning over a little-known rule that could result in hefty fines. Ahead of the summer months, motoring experts at Blackcircles have warned that those planning to drive abroad must check that their car and license meet regulations, as well as check local laws.
If not, they could be at risk of heavy fines and points on their license. One costly mistake in particular is using a dash cam, which is seen as an invasion of privacy in Portugal, Luxembourg, and Austria. Repeat offenders can be fined up to €25,000 (£21,000) in Austria. If you are found eating or drinking behind the wheel in Cyprus, including just water, you can be fined €85 (£72).
In Germany, shouting insults or making offensive gestures to police or members of the public can cost you up to €4,000 (£3,400).
James Harding, tyre specialist at Blackcircles, said: “Taking your own car, or renting a car abroad, can give holiday makers a sense of freedom; allowing them to explore their destination themselves.
“However, it is important to ensure that you have all the right documents and understand any motoring laws before travelling to your destination.”
“It is also important to check that you take time to research road signs, and carry the right documents with you when driving.”
